The Longest Horse Race In The World

[Klik her for dansk tekst]

Dear Friends, Family and Fellow Countrymen (Scotland, Denmark wherever doesn't really matter),

The Mongol Derby is the first-ever event of its kind in the world, eligible to be the longest horse race in the world, providing we succeed. I say “we” because my long suffering much better half Silvia has given me this little journey as a 50th birthday present--probably in the hope that the adventure will cure my mid life crisis once and for all.

My patient four legged friend Saffron who is coaching me on a daily basis.

What better way to cure that crisis than for me to “burn my buttocks off” riding about twenty-five Mongolian horses over 1000 kilometres of the most pristine and staggeringly beautiful countryside in the world?

The mid life crisis is for real. Please help!

But the Mongolian Derby is about a lot more than my crisis and Mongolia’s beauty: Every kilometer of this race raises money for a powerful charity, The Mercy Corps. The Mercy Corps is deeply involved in Mongolia, and 100% of all money raised by me will go to these projects. Dominic Graham, the Mercy Corps director in Mongolia, summed up the need: "Money raised by riders in the Mongol Derby will be used to fund vital initiatives run by local groups in remote parts of rural Mongolia that receive very little support from elsewhere. You can learn more about Mercy Corps at http://www.mercycorps.org.uk/aboutus/overview

How did I end up heading to Mongolia? My “one of a kind” nephew, Buddy, has been involved in other exciting Adventurist races (see his video clip). Buddy prodded me into this. Frankly, I never for a moment thought I would be accepted. But something went horribly wrong, and I was. My only chance of being disqualified now is at the start line. I cannot weigh one minnowgram over 85 kilos with my togs on.

This is my nephew on a previous Adventure - such a nice young man - watch the trailer.

To be serious for one moment, I am much looking forward to this very exciting challenge, and looking forward to raising funds for a charity that will make a direct difference in the lives of people in this very remote region of the world. If you would be interested in supporting the cause, please help us, donate, and pass on this message. If it means raising more money for the Mercy Corps, I am quite prepared to wear any form of sponsor clothing, sticker, or badge, except my kilt (and that is possible for a very large donation.)

No fox hunting in Denmark, just "tallyhoing", I wonder what there is to jump over in Mongolia?

“The Last But Not Least Team”.

I do intend to get to complete this race. But since I will be competing against hardened champion jockeys, explorers and all sorts of energetic young persons, one might as well take the right attitude from the start. So I have christened my team "Last But Not Least".

Two weeks to go, "dress rehearsal " on Frostkur an Icelandic horse, closer in size to our Mongolian mounts.

Thanking you in advance for taking the time to have a look at this and for your help and support. To make a donation click here:

And remember: It is my arse (N.America=ass) for your money going to a very good cause.
